Enter your IP cameras, access points and phones to see the total PoE power and switch size you need. English and Urdu.
What is a PoE power budget?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends data and electrical power through one network cable, so IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points and IP phones do not need separate power adapters. Every PoE switch has a total power budget in watts that is shared across all its ports. If your devices need more than the budget, some of them will not power on.
Typical power use of PoE devices
| Device | Typical power | Used in this calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed IP camera | 4 to 12 W | 8 W |
| PTZ / speed-dome camera | 20 to 30 W | 25 W |
| Wi-Fi access point | 12 to 20 W | 15 W |
| IP phone | 3 to 8 W | 6 W |
PoE standards
- 802.3af (PoE): up to 15.4 W per port, enough for most fixed cameras and phones.
- 802.3at (PoE+): up to 30 W per port, needed for PTZ cameras and many Wi-Fi 6 access points.
- 802.3bt (PoE++): up to 60 W or 90 W per port for high-power devices.
Example: 8 cameras and 2 access points
Eight fixed cameras (64 W) plus two access points (30 W) need 94 W. Adding 20% spare capacity gives about 113 W and 12 ports, so a 16-port PoE switch with a 150 W budget is a safe choice.
Tips
- Never plan to use 100% of the switch budget. Keep at least 20% spare.
- PoE cable runs must not exceed 100 metres.
- Check the datasheet of your exact camera or access point for its real power draw.
Frequently asked questions
How many cameras can an 8-port 65 W PoE switch power?
With a safe margin, about 6 fixed IP cameras at roughly 8 W each. The exact number depends on your camera model.
What is the difference between 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt?
They are PoE power levels per port: 802.3af up to 15.4 W, 802.3at up to 30 W and 802.3bt up to 60 W or 90 W.
Is the total budget or the number of ports more important?
Both matter. You need enough ports for every device and enough total watts to power them all at once, so check both numbers on the switch datasheet.
Do PTZ cameras need a special PoE switch?
Most PTZ cameras need 802.3at (30 W) ports, so choose a switch that supports 30 W on every port that connects to a PTZ camera.
